ASSESSMENT SUBJECT

Your management system

Certification applies to the agreed organizational scope.
Your application identifies the edition, activities and sites to be assessed.

UNDERSTAND THE STANDARD

What is ISO 55001 certification?

ISO 55001 addresses asset management systems. It focuses on how an organization manages assets in relation to its objectives and decisions over their lifecycle. Certification is not a valuation of assets or a guarantee that equipment will never fail.
Start with the asset portfolio and the value the organization expects it to support. Acquisition, operation, maintenance and replacement decisions often involve different teams. A useful system makes the connection between those decisions, risk and organizational objectives visible.

START WITH THE BOUNDARY

Make the scope clear.

Identify the assets or asset groups, organizational functions and locations included. Explain whether the applicant owns the assets, operates them for another party or manages selected activities. Asset ownership and responsibility for lifecycle decisions are not always held by the same organization.

FROM INTENT TO EVIDENCE

Show how your system works.

These are examples of relevant information, not a universal list of mandatory documents. The evidence depends on your activities and applicable requirements.

01

The relationship between asset objectives and organizational objectives.

02

Decision processes and information used across the asset lifecycle.

03

Responsibilities and arrangements for managing relevant risks.

04

Performance evaluation and responses to changing needs or conditions.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Put the scope into context.

A facilities operator may maintain assets owned by a customer while the customer controls replacement budgets. An enquiry should explain who makes which decisions and how information is exchanged. Without that distinction, the proposed scope can imply authority the applicant does not have.
Use this example to prepare your own scope and evidence.

HOW CERTIFICATION WORKS

A clear route from enquiry to decision.

01

Scope & application

Describe the activities, sites and standard you want assessed.

02

Assessment planning

Agree arrangements based on the application and programme.

03

Audit & response

Demonstrate the system and address findings with evidence.

04

Decision & review

Certification follows a decision, with continuing assessment as applicable.
An application or completed audit does not guarantee certification.

EDITION & APPLICATION

Confirm the right basis for assessment.

The planning reference is ISO 55001:2024. Applicable amendments, transition arrangements and the edition for your application must be confirmed before assessment is agreed.
Check the official ISO publication information. Use the official publication record to check the edition and related amendments.

CONNECTED MANAGEMENT NEEDS

Considering several standards?

Shared processes can support a coordinated system. Explain the common boundaries and the differences.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ISO 55001: frequently asked questions

Clear answers before you take the next step.
No. Maintenance may be important, but asset management also involves wider objectives, information and lifecycle decisions. Describe the full intended system rather than equating a maintenance schedule with every requirement.
Explain ownership, operating responsibilities and authority over lifecycle decisions. An operator may manage activities for an owner, but the scope must accurately describe that role.
No. Asset management system certification does not provide an asset valuation. It concerns how the organization manages its system and relevant decisions within the agreed boundary.
Other systems may share responsibilities or processes with ISO 55001, but each retains its own requirements. Explain the intended standards, sites and boundaries when discussing an integrated assessment.
The scope, activities, personnel, locations and applicable programme determine the proposed assessment work. Readiness and responses to findings also affect timing. Request a quotation based on your actual organization.
