ISO 9001:2026: What Organizations Need to Know

Updated October 1, 2026

ISO 9001:2026 is the edition listed in ISO’s current quality management system catalogue at the time of this article’s review. For an organization planning certification, the practical questions are which requirements apply to its next assessment, how any transition is handled and whether the proposed certification body can support that scope and edition.

Check the official ISO 9001 publication record rather than relying on an undated training slide or a forecast written before publication.

Separate three decisions

First, identify the published standard and obtain an authorized copy for the people who need to work with it. Second, establish the transition arrangements relevant to the organization’s certification. Third, agree the assessment route and timing with the certification body.

Those decisions are connected, but a catalogue update does not make them identical. It does not itself confirm that EQRM is authorized to issue every scope under the new edition or set a universal deadline for every existing certificate.

Plan the review around your actual system

Use the new edition to review the organization’s arrangements, responsibilities and evidence. Avoid beginning with the assumption that every document must be replaced or, at the other extreme, that changing the edition number on a manual is sufficient.

A practical review identifies the requirement being considered, the existing process, any gap, the action needed and how the result will be evaluated. This makes the work traceable and helps management distinguish substantive change from an editorial revision.

Involve the people who own the work

The quality function may coordinate the review, but processes are operated across the organization. Include the people who handle customer requirements, delivery, purchasing, changes and evaluation where those activities are relevant to scope.

Ask how current arrangements work in practice. If an instruction is difficult to follow or a recurring problem is not being addressed, an edition review can expose that issue without requiring the organization to invent a new process solely for an audit.

Keep change claims proportionate to evidence

A detailed comparison should be based on the actual editions and a competent review. This article does not reproduce the standard or claim to provide a clause-by-clause compliance checklist. Public summaries are useful introductions, but they are not substitutes for reading the requirements that apply.

For the same reason, do not treat unverified online statements about mandatory documents or deadlines as instructions for your system.

Questions for a certification discussion

  • Which edition will be used for the proposed assessment?
  • What confirmed transition arrangements apply to an existing certificate?
  • How should changes be considered alongside surveillance or recertification?
  • What evidence is needed before agreeing the assessment?
  • Does the proposed certification body’s scope cover the relevant edition and activities?

What to do next

Read ISO 9001 certification and the 2015-to-2026 planning comparison. Contact EQRM with your current position and intended scope. Do not present an application or transition plan as an already-issued certificate.

Create a focused edition-review register

Use three columns: the requirement you reviewed, its implication for your own system, and the action or evidence needed. Reference an authorized copy of the standard when recording conclusions. Mark items that need clarification instead of treating an online summary as a clause-by-clause interpretation. Review the register with the people responsible for the affected processes.

Quick answers

Does a new edition automatically change our certificate?

No. Publication and an individual certification programme are separate matters. Confirm applicable transition and assessment arrangements with the issuing body.

Where should we check edition status?

Use the official ISO catalogue and the certification body’s applicable programme information. A draft announcement and a published standard are different records.
