ACTIVITIES TO DEFINE
01
Business services
02
Advisory organizations
03
Outsourced services
Illustrative activity groups. The agreed scope describes the actual organization and work assessed.
YOUR OPERATING CONTEXT
Start with your actual activities.
Professional service organizations may use management systems to address delivery consistency, information handling and governance. The relevant scope should describe the actual services, not simply use a broad consultancy or business-services label.
Follow the movement from a client requirement to assignment planning, delivery, review and closure. Explain how the organization allocates competent resources and handles changes or concerns. If associates or subcontractors deliver part of the service, identify the responsibilities retained by the applicant.
A DEFINED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Make the boundary clear.
Identify the organization, activities and locations to be assessed. Explain interfaces with customers, suppliers and shared functions.
STANDARDS TO CONSIDER
Match the standard to the management need.
Use these subjects as a starting point for your enquiry. Each standard has its own requirements and may have a different scope.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
ISO 9001
Customer requirements, delivery controls and improvement.
INFORMATION SECURITY
ISO/IEC 27001
Information risks, access and supplier interfaces.
COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT
ISO 37301
Obligations, responsibilities and system evaluation.
Choose standards that align with your activities, objectives and operating sites.
SCOPE IN PRACTICE
Follow the responsibilities through the operation.
For example, a professional services firm may use specialists on selected assignments. The application should explain how those assignments are controlled and reviewed. An individual specialist’s qualification is not the same as certification of the firm’s management system.
Illustrative scenario, not an EQRM client case study or a prescribed control programme.
BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE
Bring the information that defines your scope.
01
The types of professional service included.
02
Personnel and associate arrangements.
03
Client information and confidentiality interfaces.
04
Professional licensing and customer acceptance requirements.
Add approximate personnel numbers, a complete site list and any existing certificates. Mention planned changes such as new locations, services or operating shifts. These are enquiry prompts, not a complete audit-document checklist.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Professional services: common questions
Answers to common scope and application questions.
Which ISO standards can professional services organizations consider?
Relevant options may include ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 37001, ISO 37301. They address different management subjects; select according to your activities and buyer requirements. The list does not make every standard mandatory or confirm availability for every proposed scope.
Does a management-system certificate replace professional registration?
No. Certification of the organization’s system and the licensing or qualification of professionals are different matters. State each claim separately and accurately.
How do associate consultants fit into the scope?
Explain which services associates deliver and the responsibilities retained by your organization for selection, assignment, communication and review. Their individual qualifications do not replace evaluation of the organization’s management system.
What is a useful scope description for a service firm?
Name the services provided, relevant organizational functions and locations. A description such as professional services may be too broad to explain what customers can rely on the certificate to cover.
What affects certification cost and timing for professional services?
The proposed scope, personnel, sites, operating patterns and relevant programme affect assessment planning. Readiness and the response to audit findings also affect timing. Provide this information to request a quotation; there is no universal price or guaranteed completion date.
