ACTIVITIES TO DEFINE

YOUR OPERATING CONTEXT
Start with your actual activities.
Logistics and transportation businesses often coordinate warehouses, carriers, systems and customer instructions across several locations. A certification enquiry should distinguish the activities the organization performs from the network services it buys.
Describe whether the organization provides warehousing, freight forwarding, transport, fulfilment or another service. Include temporary or leased facilities where they are relevant to the scope. Explain how responsibility changes as goods and information move between parties.
A DEFINED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Make the boundary clear.
Identify the organization, activities and locations to be assessed. Explain interfaces with customers, suppliers and shared functions.
STANDARDS TO CONSIDER
Match the standard to the management need.
Use these subjects as a starting point for your enquiry. Each standard has its own requirements and may have a different scope.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
ISO 9001
Customer requirements, delivery controls and improvement.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
ISO 14001
Environmental aspects and operational responsibilities.
WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY
ISO 45001
Work-related risks, participation and operating controls.
BUSINESS CONTINUITY
ISO 22301
Critical activities, disruption and recovery arrangements.
Choose standards that align with your activities, objectives and operating sites.
SCOPE IN PRACTICE
Follow the responsibilities through the operation.
A freight forwarder may arrange movements performed by independent carriers. Its certificate should not imply that every carrier is part of the certified organization. The scope discussion should identify the forwarder’s selection, communication and service-control activities without extending the claim beyond them.

BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE
Bring the information that defines your scope.
01
Service types and operational locations.
02
Owned, leased and outsourced transport or storage arrangements.
03
Customer handling requirements and continuity dependencies.
04
Activities covered by other parties’ licences or approvals.
Add approximate personnel numbers, a complete site list and any existing certificates. Mention planned changes such as new locations, services or operating shifts. These are enquiry prompts, not a complete audit-document checklist.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Logistics & transportation: common questions
Answers to common scope and application questions.
Which ISO standards can logistics and transportation organizations consider?
Relevant options may include ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22301, ISO 55001. They address different management subjects; select according to your activities and buyer requirements. The list does not make every standard mandatory or confirm availability for every proposed scope.
Can a multi-site organization assume every site will be treated the same way?
No. Site activities and applicable programme rules affect assessment planning. Provide the full site list and relevant differences; do not assume eligibility for a particular sampling approach.
Does a forwarder’s certificate cover its independent carriers?
Not automatically. A forwarder should describe its own selection, coordination and service-control activities. Check the certificate scope and obtain separate evidence where assurance about an independent carrier is required.
What should a warehouse network disclose at application?
Provide the site list, activities at each location, personnel and shift arrangements, and significant outsourced operations. Explain where customer requirements or operating conditions differ between sites.
What affects certification cost and timing for logistics and transportation?
The proposed scope, personnel, sites, operating patterns and relevant programme affect assessment planning. Readiness and the response to audit findings also affect timing. Provide this information to request a quotation; there is no universal price or guaranteed completion date.
