ISO certification for manufacturing

ACTIVITIES TO DEFINE

01

Production operations

02

Component supply

03

Industrial processing

Illustrative activity groups. The agreed scope describes the actual organization and work assessed.

YOUR OPERATING CONTEXT

Start with your actual activities.

Manufacturing certification enquiries should describe the production activities, sites and supporting processes that make up the intended management system. Product families, shifts, design responsibility and outsourced operations can materially change the scope discussion.
Trace an order through purchasing, production, inspection, release and delivery. Identify the points at which responsibility changes or information can be lost. Explain how production changes, equipment conditions and supplier performance are evaluated rather than presenting a list of procedures without context.

A DEFINED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Make the boundary clear.

Identify the organization, activities and locations to be assessed. Explain interfaces with customers, suppliers and shared functions.

STANDARDS TO CONSIDER

Match the standard to the management need.

Use these subjects as a starting point for your enquiry. Each standard has its own requirements and may have a different scope.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT

ISO 9001

Customer requirements, delivery controls and improvement.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

ISO 14001

Environmental aspects and operational responsibilities.

WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY

ISO 45001

Work-related risks, participation and operating controls.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

ISO 50001

Energy use, performance information and evaluation.

ASSET MANAGEMENT

ISO 55001

Asset lifecycle responsibilities and decisions.
Choose standards that align with your activities, objectives and operating sites.

SCOPE IN PRACTICE

Follow the responsibilities through the operation.

For example, a manufacturer may outsource a finishing process while retaining responsibility for the delivered product. Its enquiry should explain the outsourced activity, the requirements communicated to the supplier and how the result is checked. The supplier’s own certificate does not describe all of the applicant’s responsibilities.
Illustrative scenario, not an EQRM client case study or a prescribed control programme.

BEFORE YOU ENQUIRE

Bring the information that defines your scope.

01

Products and process families within scope.

02

Personnel, shifts, sites and significant outsourced stages.

03

Design and development responsibilities where relevant.

04

Equipment, energy and environmental interfaces.
Add approximate personnel numbers, a complete site list and any existing certificates. Mention planned changes such as new locations, services or operating shifts. These are enquiry prompts, not a complete audit-document checklist.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Manufacturing: common questions

Answers to common scope and application questions.
Relevant options may include ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001, ISO 55001. They address different management subjects; select according to your activities and buyer requirements. The list does not make every standard mandatory or confirm availability for every proposed scope.
No. A management-system assessment and a product approval are different. If a customer requires a specific product standard, test or sector scheme, establish that separately.
Yes. Identify each outsourced stage and explain the requirements you retain responsibility for, the supplier interface and how the output is evaluated before acceptance.
A process overview, product families, shift patterns, personnel count and site list provide useful starting information. Highlight design responsibility, outsourced stages and significant changes to production.
The proposed scope, personnel, sites, operating patterns and relevant programme affect assessment planning. Readiness and the response to audit findings also affect timing. Provide this information to request a quotation; there is no universal price or guaranteed completion date.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Let’s discuss your organization.

Tell EQRM about your manufacturing activities, locations and the standard or customer requirement you are considering. We’ll review the proposed scope and assessment arrangements.
